Claim
KP Sharma Oli gave a media interview after the appointment of Sushila Karki as interim PM.
Fact
The viral video is from 2016 after Oli’s resignation as PM.
A video allegedly showing a fresh interview of CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli after his resignation from the post of Prime Minister following the Gen Z uprisings, is going viral on TikTok.
A mass protest led by so-called gen Z group, a generation of young Nepalis, against corruption, nepotism and a fresh ban on popular social media sites including Facebook and YouTube toppled KP Sharma Oli government on September 9. After the fall of KP Oli-led coalition of Nepali Congress and CPN-UML, two largest parties in the parliament, an interim government under former Chief Justice Sushila Karki has been formed.
Against this backdrop, TikTok user @cinnet678 posted a video showing an interview of former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Text superimposed on the video reads, “Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s interview after the appointment of Sushila Karki as the new Prime Minister.” In the interview a journalist asks Oli, “People inside and outside the country have become elated with the news of your resignation.” Oli responds,”There is a saying in Hindi ‘Kavi Khusi Kavi Gam’ (which roughly translates to sometimes happiness and sometimes sadness). There are both types of people who are happy and sad. They are the reflections of their thoughts, motives, and goodwill… “
The video posted on September 17 has garnered 15.6k likes, 934 users have shared it and 795 people have commented until the last count.
The video was also shared by one Facebook page named Neplease Revolution with the caption reading “Oli’s interview after resigning as PM.”
Newschecker found the video to be misleading.
To check the veracity of the claim, Newschecker took several key frames from the viral video and reverse searches on it. A Google reverse search on a frame led us to a video, dated April 19, 2017, posted on the verified Facebook page of Communist Party of Nepal, UML.
On checking the 8:42-minute long video, we found that the interview settings bear close resemblance to the viral video including the interview host. However, we couldn’t find the clip matching the viral video.
Taking clues from the video we ran several searches on YouTube and found a video dated July 30, 2016, posted on the YouTube channel named Dekhapadi Stories. On checking the video, we found that the video clip from 1:07-minute onwards exactly matched the viral video. The video descriptions read that the video was an excerpt from an exclusive interview of KP Sharma after his resignation from the post of Prime Minister in his first stint as the executive head.
Further, we checked the current status of outgoing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and found several news articles on major online media confirming that Oli has come out of Nepal Army security and is residing in a rented house in Gundu Bhaktapur. Oli’s house in Balkot was also vandalised and torched on September 9 during the Gen Z protest. On checking an article, posted on Setopati, reported that Oli has come out of Nepal Army security nine days after he was rescued by Nepal Army from his official residence in Baluwatar.
We also found a statement issued by CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli on the occasion of Constitution Day (September 19). In his statement, Oli said that the government had not given any order to shoot targeting the demonstrators. “There was infiltration of conspirators, who instigated violence, killing our youths. Automatic firearms, which are not in possession of Nepal Police personnel, were used during the protest and it should be investigated,” he noted in his statement.
Thus, our findings clearly indicate that the viral video is old and misleading.
No, the viral video doesn’t show a fresh interview of outgoing Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli. The viral video actually shows a 2016 interview of KP Sharma after his resignation from the post of Prime Minister in his first stint as the executive head, and thus the claim is misleading.
