A news clip claiming that the Nepal government has decided to announce a public holiday on Sunday (November 30) to welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Nepal is going viral on TikTok.
TikTok user @subas1015 posted a video carrying a screen of News24 Television channel. Text superimposed on the video reads, “The Government has announced a public holiday on Sunday (November 30). Audio accompanying the video says, “”The government has decided to announce a public holiday to welcome Chinese President Xi Jin Ping, who is arriving on Saturday for a two-day state visit to Nepal. A Cabinet meeting held on Thursday decided to give a public holiday on Sunday. The Home Ministry put forth a proposal to this effect. The government has been continuing the tradition to announce a public holiday during the visits of various state heads. The government is preparing to accord a high-level welcome and security during his two-day visit to Kathmandu. Various agreements will be signed during the visit.”

The video posted on November 28 has garnered 5573 likes, 409 users have shared it and 60 people have commented until the last count.
Newschecker found the news clip to be old.
To check the veracity, Newschecker ran searches by using relevant Nepali key-phrases and found several articles regarding the public holiday for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s Nepal visit.
We checked an article, dated October 12, 2019, posted on Ratopati online. The article reported that the Cabinet meeting has decided to announce a public holiday on Sunday for the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping.
On checking an article, dated October 12, 2019, published on Himalayan Times online, we found that the government decided to announce a public holiday on Sunday.
Taking cue from the article and the logo of News24 Television on the top right corner of the screen, we ran a search on YouTube and found a video, dated October 11, 2019, posted on the YouTube channel of News24 Television. On checking the 50-second video, we found that the news clip exactly matched the audio accompanying the video. The image carried in the viral video also resembled a news report of News 24 Channel.
We also searched for news regarding Xi Jinping’s visit but didn’t find any credible reports.
Thus, our findings clearly indicated that the news clip carried in the viral video is from October 2019 and shared as recent.
No, Nepal government has not decided to announce a public holiday for Sunday to welcome Chinese President Xi Jinping. The viral news clip is from 2019 when Chinese President Xi arrived in Nepal for a two-day state visit.
