Claim
Baba Ram Dev arrived in Nepal to meet ex-PM Madhav Kumar Nepal after he was indicted in a land misappropriation case.
Fact
Viral video shows Baba Ram Dev’s 2021 visit to Nepal.
A video allegedly showing Yog Guru Baba Ram Dev arriving in Nepal to meet former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal after he was indicted in a land scam is going viral on TikTok.
The video has gone viral after the Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) charged former prime minister and CPN-Unified Socialist chairman Nepal in a land misappropriation case linked to Patanjali Yogpeeth-Nepal.
The anti-graft agency filed the case against 93 individuals including Nepal for facilitating purchase of land by Patanjali Yogpeeth supposedly to set up a yoga centre and herbal farming in Kavre district, some 40 km from Kathmandu.
Against this backdrop, TikTok user @rishipandit800 posted a video carrying a clip of Baba Ram Dev’s media interview. The video also carries a photo of Madhav Kumar Nepal. Text superimposed on the video reads, “Baba Ram Dev came to Nepal to meet Madhav Kumar Nepal.” In the clip, when asked in Hindi why he came to Nepal, Ram Dev says, “Nepal is one of the best spiritual countries in the world, and I have a nearly three-decade long soulful connection. Patanjali Yogpeeth has been rendering services in India such as Yog, Ayurveda and health. Nepal is the second biggest destination of Patanjali, where we have more than 70,000 trained Yog teachers and hundreds of thousands of followers. Ninety-nine percent of Nepali follow Yog. We are expanding Patanjali Yogpeeth. We have Patanjali Ayurvedic college, Patanjali service Ashram. We have been supporting this country in health, education, research and agriculture. I came here with Acharya Bal Krishna with a gift of new service.”
The video posted on June6 has garnered 2392 likes, 87 users have shared it and 65 people have commented until the last count. The archived version of the TikTok video can be seen here.
Newschecker found the claim to be false.
To check the veracity of the claim, Newschecker split the video into several key-frames and ran a reverse search on it. A reverse search on a frame led us to an article, carrying an image resembling the frame from the viral video, posted on Reporters Nepal online. The article, dated Nov 18, 2021, reported that Baba Ram Dev said that Nepal is one of the best spiritual countries in the world.
The article’s content also matched Baba Ram Dev’s response in the viral clip. The article also noted that Baba Ram Dev was responding to the media upon his arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport for a visit.
Further, we ran a search on YouTube by taking clues from the article and the viral clip and found a video, dated November 19, 2021, posted on the YouTube channel named Kendrabindu News. On checking the video, we found that the footage from 0.21-minute onwards matched the viral clip.
We also found another video, dated November 19, 2021, matching the viral clip, posted on the YouTube channel named Harprahar TV. The video clip from 0.24-minute onwards matched the viral video.
Thus, our findings clearly showed that the viral video shows an old interview clip of Baba Ram Dev when he visited Nepal in November 2021, and his visit has nothing to do with the recent indictment of former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal in Patanjali land scam.
No, the viral video does show Baba Ram Dev’s arriving in Kathmandu after former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal was indicted in a land scam case. The viral video is old, and thus the claim is misleading.
