Claim
Preparations are being made to form a new government and Rabi Lamichhane is all set to be appointed as the Home Minister.
Fact
Viral video shows 2021 clip of Sher Bahadur Deuba speaking during the 14th General Convention of Nepali Congress
A 41-second video allegedly showing Nepali Congress President and former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba addressing a mass after the fall of KP Oli led government is going viral on TikTok. The video goes on to claim that the new government under Deuba is all set to appoint Rashtriya Swatantra party (RSP) Chairman Rabi Lamichhane as the Home Minister.
TikTok user @chhetri.jay posted a video showing Sher Bahadur Deuba addressing a mass. Text superimposed on the video reads, “See what is happening. Listen to the clear voice of Deuba for the first time. Preparation to form a new government and Rabi Lamichhane is going to be appointed as the Home Minister again.” In the video, Deuba says, “There was terror in the country. Everyone felt relieved and liberated after I became the prime minister. People got liberation from Oli [CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli] administration. The General Convention will decide the future course, and Nepali Congress will form governments from local to central level. I will take the responsibility.”
The video posted on October 21 has garnered 689 likes, and 67 users have shared it.
Newschecker found the claim to be misleading.
Fact Check /Verification
To check the veracity of the claim, Newschecker took a key-frame from the viral video and ran a reverse search on Google. The search threw up several videos matching the viral videos. On checking a video, dated December 10, 2021, published on the YouTube channel named Nagarik Press, we found that the video exactly matched the viral video.
We also noticed the logo of Yoho Television on the top right corner of the viral video. Taking a clue from it, we searched on the YouTube Channel of Yoho Television and found a video, dated December 10, 2021, posted on the channel. On checking the full video, we found that the video showed the speech of Sher Bahadur Deuba during the 14th general convention of Nepal Congress.
Further, we found an article, dated Nov 2, 2024, published on Rising Nepal online which reported that NC President Deuba, recently speaking at a programme in Bhaktapur, praised the current KP Oli-led government’s 100-day performance.
According to the July 1 deal between Nepali Congress President Deuba and CPN-UML Chairman Oli, the two parties will lead the government on a rotational basis until next general elections scheduled for 2027. There are no reports of any friction between the two parties as of now.
Thus, our findings clearly showed that the viral video showed an old speech of Nepal Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba addressing his party’s 14th General Convention in December 2021.
Conclusion
No, the current coalition under Oli has not toppled and there is no preparation to form a new government under Deuba including Rabi Lamichhane as the Home Minister. An old clip of Deuba’s address during the NC General Convention is being passed off as recent with false claims.
Result: False
