A video claiming that Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) mayor Balendra Shah has put pressure on Prime Minister Sushila Karki to sack Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal is going viral on TikTok.
TikTok user @chandr388 posted a video carrying a news clip in which the presenter says Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Mayor Balendra Shah has put pressure on the prime minister to sack Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal. The presenter goes on to say, “Balen put pressure for sacking the Home Minister for his failure to arrest KP Oli [then prime minister] who killed 76 by suppressing the Gen Z protest. Balen, who proposed Aryal for the post of Home Minister earlier, has demanded to appoint Mira Chaudhary as the new home minister.” Text superimposed on the video reads, “Balen has demanded to appoint Mira Chaudhary as the home minister.”

The video posted on October 15 has raked 11.6k likes, 398 users have shared it and 594 people have commented until the last count.
We also found a Facebook post. The archived version of the TikTok video can be seen here.
Newschecker found the claim to be false.
To check the veracity of the claim, Newschecker ran several searches for news regarding KMC mayor Balen Shah’s demand to sack Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal by using several relevant key words. However, the search didn’t yield any relevant results.
Mayor Balendra Shah had stood in support of the Gen Z protest that toppled the erstwhile government headed by KP Sharma Oli and he also supported the decision to appoint Sushila Karki as the prime minister. Om Prakash Aryal, who had served as legal advisor to mayor Balen Shah, was appointed Home Minister in the interim government.
Media reports have noted that the trusted relationship with Shah has now placed Home Minister Aryal in the minister’s post during one of the most turbulent periods in Nepal’s democratic journey.
We then checked the verified social media pages of mayor Balendra Shah, who often expresses his opinions on social media. But we didn’t find anything related to his disappointment with Home Minister Aryal.
On digging further by using relevant Nepali keywords, we found several media reports regarding the press statement issued by Prime Minister Karki’s secretariat rejecting the rumors that KMC mayor Balendra Shah has exerted pressure on interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki to sack Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal.
On checking an article, dated October 30, posted on Setopati online, we found that PM Karki’s chief personal aide Adarsha Kumar Shrestha issued a statement stating that the prime minister doesn’t appoint or remove ministers under pressure or influence of any one. The statement carried in the article noted that Home Minister Aryal, who took the responsibility of Home Ministry under difficult circumstances after the Gen Z protest, has been striving to live up to his responsibility of creating a conducive environment to hold the elections.

We also found another article on the statement by the Prime Minister’s secretariat refuting the rumor of Prime Minister Karki under pressure for sacking Home Minister Aryal.
We also checked the current status of Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal and found that he has been carrying out his duties as Home Minister. We found an article, dated October 30, posted on Diplomat Nepal, regarding US Ambassador Dean R Thompson’s meeting with minister Aryal.
Thus, our findings show that the viral claim is exaggerated and false.
No, KMC mayor Balendra Shah has not exerted pressure on Prime Minister Karki to sack the Home Minister. The viral video is false.
