Fact Check /Verification

To check the veracity of the claim, we took a key-frame from the viral video and ran a reverse search on it. The search threw up several results resembling the image carried in the viral video.

On checking a short video, dated October 4, 2024, posted on the YouTube channel named Daily Show Nepal, we found that the video frame exactly matched the viral video. The video description noted that the video showed a building collapsing into a river in Panauti, in Kavrepalanchok district.

Our search led us to another video, dated September 28, 2024, captured from another angel posted on the YouTube channel named Capital Nepal. The video description read that a house on the bank of Roshi river in Malpi, Panauti Municipality-8, collapsed due to the floods.

Further, we found a news article dated, October 6, 2024, published on Setopati online about the death toll in Kavrepalanchok. The news article reported that 77 people died in the floods and landslides in Panauti owing to the incessant rains that began from September 26 and ended on September 28.

We also found a video, dated September 28, posted on the Facebook pages of Bethanchok khabar, and Chakrapath Online, resembling the viral video. The video from another angle, which had gone viral in the aftermath of the devastating floods in Panauti in September 2024, matched the image carried in the viral video. The Facebook posts read, “A house being swept away at Malpi in Panauti Municipality-8.”

Thus, our findings clearly showed that the image carried in the viral video shows a building collapsing into Roshi River in Panauti in September 2024, and not the Trishuli River.

Conclusion

No, the viral video does show a recent image of a building collapsing into Trishuli River. The viral image actually shows a building collapsing into the Roshi River in Panauti of Kavrepalanchok during the devastating floods of September 2024.
