Protesters set fire to a police van on a Highway after a communal clash in Sunsari.
No, the viral video shows an arson attack on police vehicle during the Gen Z protest in September 2025.
A video allegedly showing a police pick-up truck in flames after the protesters angered by the violence in Sunsari torched the vehicle is going viral on TikTok.
A fatal clash between two communities in Kaptanganj of Devanaganj Rural Municipality-3, Sunsari, on the night of July 26 sparked protests across several Tarai districts. An indefinite curfew order has been imposed in the bordering districts following the clash in which one person was killed and around 22 others including security personnel were injured in the violence.
Against this backdrop, TikTok user @brpskilllab posted a video showing a burning police van emitting smoke. Text superimposed on the video reads, “Incensed by Sunsari clash incident, protesters torch a van belonging to an area police office on the highway.”
The video posted on July 29 has garnered 37 likes, and three users have commented until the last count.
Newschecker found the claim to be misleading.
To check the veracity of the claim, Newschecker took a key-frame from the viral video and ran reverse search on it. The search threw up several results matching the video.
On checking an article, dated September 9, 2025, posted on Annapurna online, we found that the photo showing a burning police vehicle exactly matched the viral video. The article read that the protesters who reached Chandranigahapur in Rautahat district torched a police vehicle.
We also found a video, dated September 9, 2025, posted on the YouTube channel named Birgunj City, bearing a close resemblance to the TikTok video. Upon checking the video, we found that the first 16-second of the video exactly matched the viral video.
Further, we found another article, dated Sept 9, 2025, posted on Drishti online, carrying a photo matching the viral video. The news article reported an arson attack on a police vehicle by the protesters during last year’s Gen Z uprising in Chandranigahapur, Rautahat.
Thus, our findings clearly indicate that the viral video is not recent but an old clip from the Gen Z movement.
No, the viral video doesn’t show recent torching of a police vehicle by the protesters angered by Sunsari violence. The viral video actually shows an old clip of a police vehicle burning after the Gen Z protesters set fire to it on September 9, 2025. Thus, the claim is misleading.
