Claim
Nepal Army announced that Nepali soldiers will be deployed at Nepal-India border.
Fact
Viral claim is AI generated.
An eight-second video allegedly showing a Nepal Army officer declaring that Nepali soldiers will be deployed at Nepal-India border is going viral on TikTok.
Tiktok user @routineofsmartnepal posted a video showing an apparent army officer delivering a speech in which he declares, “Nepal Army soldiers will be deployed at borders with India. India has encroached our border. We will keep our soldiers at the residences of political leaders.” The people listening to the speech respond by saying, “Jaya Nepal.”
The video posted on July 25 has garnered 28.5k likes, 1307 users have commented and 1166 people have shared the video until the last count.
Newschecker found the claim to be misleading.
To check the veracity of the claim, Newschecker took a keyframe from the viral video and ran a reverse search on it. The search, however, didn’t yield any credible result.
We then looked up the website of Nepal Army to check if the Nepal Army had made any announcement about deploying the soldiers at borders. However, we didn’t find any news or statement distantly matching the viral video.
Further, we searched about the security forces deployed at Nepal’s borders with India and China and found that the primary responsibility for guarding Nepal’s border rests with the Armed Police Force and not the Nepal Army (See here).
We found an article, dated March 11, 2020, regarding the deployment of a team comprising the Nepal Army to measure Nepal’s borders with India and China following the Kalapani border dispute with India the same year. However, the deployment has no relevance with the announcement made in the viral video.
Likewise, we also noticed a discrepancy in the formal uniform worn by the office in the viral video.
As the statement of the army officer sounded bizarre, we downloaded the video and checked it by using AI detection tool Hive Moderation which clearly indicated that the video is 100 percent AI-generated and the audio is 75 percent likely to be generated by using AI.
Further, we captured a screenshot from the viral video and checked it by using another AI detection tool named WasItAI and results noted that it was quite confident that the image, or a significant part of it, was created by AI.
Thus, our findings clearly showed that the viral video is generated by using AI.
No, Nepal Army has not announced to deploy Nepali soldiers at borders with India. The viral video is AI Generated and thus is false.
