A news clip claiming that 507 Nepali people were killed in the flash floods in Uttarakhand India is going viral on Tiktok.
TikTok user @mannepali183 posted a 10-second video carrying a news clip of the flash floods in Uttarakhand state of India. Text superimposed on the video reads, “507 Nepali people from Jajarkot district were killed in a flash flood in Uttarakhand state of India.”
The video posted on August 9 has garnered 8039 likes, 390 users have shared it and 402 people have commented until the last count.
The archived version of the TikTok video can be seen here.
To check the veracity of the claim, Newschecker searched the latest update on the Uttarakhand flash floods and found several articles on the recent status of the flash floods that hit Dharali village in Uttarakhand on August 5. On checking an article, dated August 12, 2025, published on BBC, we found that news reported that 66 people are still missing in Uttarakhand floods.
We also found a news article, dated August 12, published on Hindu which noted that experts from the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) on Tuesday (August 12, 2025) launched a search operation to trace the 66 people, including 24 Nepali labourers, reported missing since raging waters and mudslides buried virtually half of Dharali village in Uttarkashi a week ago.
Another article, dated August 12, 2025, published in Deccan Herald quoted Commissioner of Garhwal division Vinay Shankar that five of the 29 Nepali labourers, who were reported missing initially, have been contacted after the restoration of the mobile network in the area.
As we found a huge difference in the death toll report in the viral video, we closely observed the video and noticed the logo of News24 television on the top right corner. Taking a clue from it, we searched for the recent videos on the YouTube channel of popular television. Our search led us to a video, dated August 8, 2025, posted on the YouTube channel of New24 TV. On checking the video, we found that the news clip from 0.5-second onwards exactly matched the viral clip.
On listening to the news clip without the caption, we found that the news anchor actually said that five people from a single family among seven Nepalis were killed in Uttarakhand flash floods. The caption laid on top of the video is misconstrued and exaggerated.
Thus, our findings clearly showed that a news 24 television clip was shared with a false caption.
The viral video claiming that 507 Nepali people died in the Uttarakhand flash flood is misleading. The video is being shared with a wrong caption.
