Claim
Secondary Education Examination (Grade 10 board exam) has been cancelled.
Fact
No, viral video carries a voice-over from 2020.

A video claiming that the government has decided not to conduct this year’s Secondary Education Examination (SEE or Grade 10 board exam) that was slated to begin from March 20, is going viral on TikTok.

TikTok user @kpsharmaoli_official3 posted a video showing a generic photo of school students sitting for their exams. Text superimposed on the video reads, “Dear SEE students this year’s SEE exams won’t be conducted.” Audio accompanying the video presented in a news reporting style says, “SEE exams has been cancelled. A Cabinet meeting held on Wednesday has decided not to conduct this year’s SEE exams. The Cabinet has decided to evaluate the students based on the internal performance. The meaning of internal performance is that the students will get marks according to results of the previously held sent-up exams.”

The video posted on March 11 has garnered 101k likes, 12.3k users have shared it and 1635 people have commented until the last count.

The archived version of the TikTok video can be seen here.
Newschecker found the claim to be misleading.

Fact Check /Verification

To check the veracity of the claim, Newschecker first looked up the mainstream media to check if the government has decided to cancel this year’s Secondary Education Exam. However, we didn’t find any relevant results.

We then searched for latest news regarding the SEE exams and found a news article, dated March 17, published on Himalayan Times online, which reported that the National Examinations Board has completed all preparation for the Secondary Education Examination.

We found another article, dated March 17, published on Nepal Live online. The article noted that a total of 522,000 students, both regular and partial, will take part in the (2025 AD) SEE, slated to begin on March 20.

Further, we ran searches on Google by using relevant keywords and found several old articles regarding the cancellation of SEE exams in 2020 owing to the coronavirus pandemic. On checking an article, dated June 10, 2020, published on Kathmandu Post online, we found that the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday decided to cancel SEE for the year and issue certificates based on the internal evaluation conducted by respective schools. Other article about the cancellation of SEE exams can be seen here.

The sentence about the cancellation of SEE exactly matched the voiceover carried by the viral video, thus lending credence to the fact that old audio from 2020 was passed off recently at the threshold of the SEE exam.

Conclusion

No, the Cabinet has not decided to cancel the SEE exams. The voice-over carried in the viral video is from June 2020 when the government decided to cancel the SEE exams because of the coronavirus pandemic, and promote the students based on internal evaluations.

Result: False
