Claim
Prime Minister Sushila Karki announced that she will hand over the nation to the king.
Fact
A viral video shows PM Karki extending festival greetings.

A video allegedly showing Prime Minister Sushila Karki announcing that she will hand over the nation to the king is going viral on TikTok.

TikTok user @generationz50 posted a video showing Prime Minister Sushila Karki addressing the nation. Text superimposed on the video reads, “This morning at 4 Prime Minister Sushila Karki announced that she will hand over the nation to the king.”

In her address, PM Karki says, “Namaskar dear brothers and sisters living in and outside the country. We are in the midst of celebrating our festivals. Yamapanchak has begun, we are going to celebrate festivals such as Maha Pooja, Nepal Sambat 1146, and Chhat. We express our heartfelt greetings on the occasion of the festivals. These festivals which come with the lights of Deepawali are epitome of hope, faith and prosperity. We celebrate these festivals as a symbol of victory of good over evil and justice over injustice. This year we are moving ahead with the aspiration for change and responsibility of the new journey. Honouring the responsibility put on our shoulder by the Gen Z protest of Sept 8 & 9, the government has expressed its firm commitment of adopting the path of inclusive, transparent and accountable rule. We are clear on our primary responsibility of preparing the foundation of good-governance and development and hold the election in a free and fair manner on March 6. It is our culture to remain undivided during tough times.  Let us unite and move ahead to build a bright future of new Nepal by ending the illusion of pessimism and darkness.”

The video posted earlier in the day has garnered 16.5k likes, 849 users have shared it and 546 people have commented until the last count.

Newschecker found the claim to be misleading.

Fact Check /Verification

To check the veracity of the claim, Newschecker took a key frame from the viral video and ran a reverse search on it. The search threw up several results matching the viral video.

On checking a video, dated Oct 20, 2025, posted on the YouTube channel named Bizness News, we found that the video exactly matches the viral clip.

We found the same clip of PM Karki extending greetings on the occasion of festivals including Tihar, Nepal Sambat or Chhat on several other channels (See here, here & here). However, we did not find PM Karki talking about her intention to hand over the reins of the government to the king.

Former Chief Justice Sushila Karki was catapulted to the post of Prime Minister after the Gen Z protest of September 8 & 9 toppled the erstwhile government under CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli. The interim government led by Karki is mandated to conduct the elections slated for March 6.

On digging further, we did not find any reports or videos to support the claim that PM Karki has announced to hand over the nation to the deposed king. Our findings clearly indicate that the video showing PM Karki extending festival greetings is being passed off with a false caption.

Conclusion

No, Prime Minister Sushila Karki has not announced that she will hand over the state power to the former King. The viral video is being shared with a misleading caption.
