A video claiming that Prime Minister Balendra Shah and Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) Chairman Sudan Gurung have welcomed back Sudan Gurung as Home Minister are going viral on TikTok.
Home Minister Sudan Gurung resigned on April 22 after increasing criticism over his share investments in companies linked to controversial Nepali businessmen Sulav Agrawal and Deepak Bhatta, who are under investigation for money laundering.
Against this backdrop, TikTok user @ronkhaba posted a video carrying a collage of Prime Minister Balendra Shah, Rastriya Swatantra Party Chairman Rabi Lamichhane and Sudan Gurung. Text superimposed on the video reads, “Rabi and Balen have welcomed back Sudan Gurung as Home Minister. The re-appointment of Sudan Gurung as Home Minister has signaled a rare unity and political cooperation in Nepal. This kind of coordination between the leaders with diverse ideology has increased the expectation for good governance and internal security. This has shown the direction towards political stability and effective administration.”

The video posted on April 27 has garnered 7068 likes, 149 users have shared it and 133 people have commented until the last count.

To check the veracity of the claim, Newschecker searched for news reports on the reappointment of Sudan Gurung as Home Minister by using relevant keywords. However, the search did not yield any credible results about the reinstatement of Gurung to the post of Home Minister. The news of Gurung’s resignation from the post of Home Minister was widely covered in major international media.
We then checked the status of the investigation against Sudan Gurung and found a news article, dated April 29, posted on the ekantipur. The article reported that RSP Chairman Rabi Lamichhane told the media after his party’s parliamentary party meeting that the investigation process against Sudhan Gurung will begin soon.
We found another news article, dated April 29, posted on Nepalkhabar online. The article also reported that the Rastriya Swatantra Party has decided to form a parliamentary probe committee to study the questions raised against Sudan Gurung.
Further, we looked up the website of Nepal’s Home Ministry and found the photo of Prime Minister Balen Shah, who has been looking after the Home Ministry, after Gurung’s resignation. We also checked the Facebook page of Gurung, where he had posted his decision to resign. But we did not find any significant post regarding his reappointment.
Thus, our findings clearly indicated that Gurung has not been reinstated as home minister.
