Fact Check: Clip From British Movie 1917 Falsely Shared As Russia-Ukraine War

At a time when the Russia-Ukraine war that broke out in February 2022 shows no sign of ending, a viral video purportedly showing a scene from the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine is going viral on TikTok.

TikTok user @ramesh_khawas90 posted a video showing two soldiers walking in a battlefield. Text superimposed on the video reads, “The war between Russia and Ukraine. Watch the war between the two countries with a strong heart.”

The video posted on August 22 has garnered 22.9k likes, 257 users have shared it and 130 people have commented on it.Newschecker found the claim to be misleading.

Fact Check /Verification

To check the authenticity of the claim made in the viral video, Newschcker split the video into several keyframes and conducted reverse searches on them. The results pointed us to a 2019 British war film directed and produced by Sam Mendes. On checking a 7.32-minute clip of the movie 1917 published on a YouTube channel named All Action, we found that the video frame from the 3.50-minute timestamp exactly matched the viral video.

Further, we checked another video published on the YouTube channel named Screen Bites and found that the footage from the 3.32-minute timestamp exactly matched the viral footage.

Thus, our findings clearly show that the viral video is a movie clip of the British war movie 1917.   

Conclusion

The viral video allegedly showing a scene of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine is misleading. The viral clip actually shows a clip of a British war movie from 1917.
