Claim
India has been removed from BRICS core committee.
Fact
The viral claim is false.
A video claiming that India has been removed from BRICS core committee has gone viral on TikTok.
The BRICS is an intergovernmental group of major emerging economies—Brazil, Russia, India and China—officially created in 2006 to help the governments coordinate economic and political efforts around shared goals. In 2009, the bloc held an inaugural BRICs Summit in Yekaterinburg, Russia. A year later, South Africa formally joined the group.
TikTok user @frontafrica posted a video showing a photo of Russian President Vladimir Putin shaking hands with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Text superimposed on the video reads, “India has been removed from the BRICS core committee.”
The video posted on November 9 has garnered 18.2k likes, 1161 users have shared and 4388 people have commented until the last count.
A Facebook account named Chaudry Muhammad Najeeb also post the same photo on November 10, 2024, with the caption reading, “#BREAKING: Just in, India has been removed from the BRICS core committee.”
Newschecker found the claim to be misleading.
Fact Check /Verification
To check the veracity of the claim, Newschecker ran a search on Google by using several relevant key-phrases to check if India was removed from the BRICS core committee. However, the search didn’t throw up any relevant results.
We, then, looked up the official website of BRICS and checked the news section but did find any news regarding BRICS removing India from its core committee. We found the latest news, dated November 20, that reads, “Russia explores four Icebreakers in India.”
Further, we checked the verified X (Formerly Twitter) handle of BRICS News and found a recent post reading, “Russia-India trade will surpass $60 billion by the end of 2024,” lending credence to the fact that India’s cooperation with its founding partner countries is intact and strengthening.
We ran a Google reverse search on the image carried in the viral video. The search led us to a news article, dated July 22, 2024, posted on the verified handle of BRICS News. The photo showing Putin and Xi carried in the post exactly matched the viral video. The news reads, Russia says “BRICS must be prepared for the collapse of the dollar.”
Thus, our findings clearly showed that the claim made in the viral video is baseless and couldn’t be verified from any authentic news source.
Conclusion
No, India has not been removed from BRICS countries. The viral video is misleading.
Result: False
