Claim
Prime Minister KP Oli said the current coalition of CPN-UML and Nepali Congress will ruin the country.
Fact
The viral video is old and shows Oli speaking against the alliance of Nepali Congress and UCPN (Maoist Centre).
A video claiming to show Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli saying that the current ruling alliance of Nepali Congress and CPN-UML will be detrimental to the country is going viral on TikTok.
The current coalition of CPN-UML and Nepali Congress was formed on July 14 after a deal between UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba struck a deal on July 2.
Against this backdrop, TikTok user @loken.tmg21 posted a video showing Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli delivering a speech. Text superimposed on the video reads, “The continuation of this CPN-UML and Nepali Congress alliance will ruin the nation: KP Oli.” In the video Oli is heard saying, “If the current coalition continues to exist, the country will be destroyed. The future of you and your children will be spoiled. That’s why I am asking for votes through this message. But I am not asking for your votes for the victory of CPN-UML.”
The video posted on November 18 has garnered 2463 likes, 147 users have shared it and 665 people have commented until the last count.
Newschecker found the claim to be misleading.
Fact Check /Verification
To check the veracity of the claim, Newschecker split the video into several keyframes and ran reverse searches on them. A Google reverse search on a frame from the viral video led us to a news report, dated November 16, 2022, posted on Khabarbani online.
On checking the news article, we found that the news was about the 1.37-minute video message of KP Sharma Oli appealing to the voters to vote for his party CPN-UML ahead of parliamentary elections slated for November 20, 2022. KP Sharma Oli’s party CPN-UML was in the opposition bench when he delivered the appeal for votes. We found that ‘the current alliance’ he was referring to was the coalition of Nepali Congress and UCPN (Maoist Centre). The content of message matched the viral clip.
Further, we ran a search on Google by using the clue from the article published on Khabarbani and found another article, dated November 16, 2022, published on Ratopati online. The article also carried the full video message of KP Sharma Oli posted on his Facebook page. We checked the video message and found that the message from 0.51-minute onwards exactly matched the viral video.
Thus, our findings clearly demonstrate that the viral video is old and shows a clip of KP Sharma Oli’s message to the voters ahead of the November 20 elections in 2022.
Conclusion
No, the viral video doesn’t show KP Sharma Oli saying the current ruling alliance of CPN-UML and Nepali Congress will ruin the nation. The viral video shows Oli actually saying that the alliance of Nepali Congress and UCPN (Maoist Centre) will be detrimental to the nation.
